Frank McCourt

Frank McCourt, the Irish-American teacher and Pulitzer Prize–winning writer, was born on August 19, 1930, and died on July 19, 2009.

He was best known for his memoir Angela’s Ashes, the tragicomic story of his family’s early struggles. This booked earned McCourt the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1996 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1997.

His two other memoirs include ‘Tis (1999) and Teacher Man (2005), which tell the stories of when he finally settled in America as a young man and his days as a New York City teacher respectively.
